Drones, Fireworks & Dodging Rogue Pilots – Filming Liphook Carnival 2024

Colin Fyfield

This year’s Liphook Carnival was an absolute blast—literally! Fireworks, a dazzling procession, and thousands of people celebrating in style. Naturally, we were there with our drones, capturing it all from above (safely, of course).

A Century-Old Tradition

The Liphook Carnival has been lighting up the village since 1902, making it a cherished tradition for over a century. Originally starting as an ‘Old Boys’ Bonfire Club’ celebrating the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, it has evolved into a vibrant event that unites the community.

Flying a Drone at a Carnival? No Pressure…

Filming an event like this isn’t exactly a walk in the park. You’ve got crowds, moving floats, unpredictable weather, and the added thrill of flying in the dark—because who doesn’t love a challenge? We worked closely with the Liphook Carnival Committee, conducting risk assessments, pre-flight planning, and onsite surveys to ensure everything was done by the book.

Other Drones? Oh, They Were There…

Now, you’d think a major event would mean everyone follows the rules. Nope. Other drones were spotted zipping around the sky, and at one point, I had to land mine to avoid a potential mid-air dance. The last thing you want is an unexpected fireworks finale featuring rogue drones. But as always, we kept it professional, ensuring we got stunning shots without any crash landings.

The Liphook Herald Loved It!

After the event, we shared our aerial and ground footage with the Liphook Carnival Committee, who will be putting together their official event videos. On top of that, the Liphook Herald featured both our ground and drone photography, so if you see a particularly stunning shot in the paper… yeah, that was us.
